Placement Preparation Strategy That Actually Works

Placement season is stressful because most students start preparing too late and without a plan. This strategy breaks down exactly what to do in each of the 12 weeks leading up to your placements. Follow it, and you walk into interviews with confidence instead of panic.

Key takeaways

  • Month 1: Foundation — DSA basics, resume, one full-stack project.
  • Month 2: Depth — advanced DSA, system design, start mock interviews.
  • Month 3: Execution — revise, mocks, real interviews.
  • Treat interviews as conversations, not examinations.
  • The goal is the right fit, not every offer.
1

Month 1 — Foundation

The first month is about building a strong foundation. Start with DSA basics — arrays, strings, hash maps, and linked lists. Solve 2-3 problems daily and focus on understanding patterns rather than memorising solutions. Simultaneously, finalise your resume and get it reviewed by seniors or mentors.

Begin your project portfolio. Pick one full stack project that you can explain deeply: architecture decisions, database schema, deployment strategy. This single project will answer most 'tell me about yourself' variations.

  • DSA: Arrays, strings, hash maps, linked lists — 3 problems daily
  • Resume: Finalise and get reviewed
  • Project: Start one full-stack project you can own
  • Networking: Connect with 3-5 alumni working at target companies
2

Month 2 — Depth

Month two is where you build depth. Trees, graphs, dynamic programming, and system design basics. This is the hardest month because the concepts are genuinely difficult. Push through it — this is where most candidates quit and where you gain your advantage.

Start giving mock interviews. Pair up with a friend or use a mock interview platform. The first mock will be uncomfortable. By the fifth, you will be fluent. Also start applying to your dream companies and tier-2 companies simultaneously.

3

Month 3 — Execution

The final month is all about execution. Revise patterns, not problems. Give at least 10 mock interviews. Practice explaining your thought process out loud. By now, solving a new medium-difficulty DSA problem should take 20-30 minutes.

During the actual interviews, remember: the interviewer wants you to succeed. They are evaluating your problem-solving approach, not testing whether you have seen the exact problem before. Communicate clearly, handle feedback gracefully, and treat every interview as a learning experience regardless of the outcome.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When should I start placement prep?

Ideally 3-4 months before placements begin. Starting earlier reduces stress and gives you time to build depth.

How many companies should I apply to?

15-20 companies across tiers. Dream companies (3-4), target companies (5-8), and safety companies (5-8).

What if I fail an interview?

Every failed interview is data. Analyse what went wrong, fix it, and apply to the next one. Most successful placements involve 3-5 rejections before the right offer.
